Businesses Close for A Day Without Immigrants Protest

Many businesses across the United States are closing their doors on Monday as part of the “A Day Without Immigrants” protest against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Employees in various industries, including restaurants and retail, are expected to stay home as part of the demonstration.

CBS News reported that some workplaces in Minnesota are shutting down for the day. Washington, DC, is also seeing several restaurants closing in solidarity with the protest. NBC Washington noted that the movement encourages immigrants to stay home from both work and school to emphasize their role in daily life.

Chicago businesses are also participating, coinciding with the Trump administration’s recent immigration enforcement actions, including deportation arrests in the Chicago area, according to Fox 32. Several businesses in California’s Bay Area have joined the protest as well, NBC Bay Area reported.

The protest echoes a similar event in 2017, which Breitbart News previously covered. That year’s “Day Without Immigrants” demonstration largely failed to make an economic impact, and some workers who skipped work lost their jobs as a result. One notable case occurred in Oklahoma, where the I Don’t Care Bar and Grill in Catoosa fired multiple employees who participated in the strike and quickly replaced them with new workers.

Breitbart News also reported that the 2022 version of the protest had little economic effect, as many illegal immigrants enter the U.S. to work, often sending money home or paying off debts to those who financed their entry into the country.

As protests continue across the nation, hundreds marched on Sunday in opposition to Trump’s deportation policies. While these demonstrations aim to highlight immigrants’ contributions to society, past protests have shown limited influence on immigration policy or economic conditions.
