Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is facing a censure resolution after making derogatory remarks about Governor Greg Abbott’s use of a wheelchair. During a Human Rights Campaign event, Crockett referred to Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” prompting widespread condemnation from Republican lawmakers.
At the Los Angeles event, Crockett stated, “Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there. Come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey.” Governor Abbott has been paraplegic since age 26 due to a tragic accident when a tree fell on him during a jog.
In response, Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) has introduced a resolution to censure Crockett. Weber described her comments as “discriminatory in nature” and indicative of a “continued series of inappropriate comments.”
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) labeled Crockett’s remarks as “disgraceful,” emphasizing the inappropriateness of such statements. Attorney General Ken Paxton also condemned the comments, calling them “despicable.”
Crockett defended herself on social media, asserting that her remarks targeted Abbott’s policies, particularly his actions of transporting migrants into communities led by Black mayors, rather than his disability. She stated, “I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors.”
This incident adds to a series of controversies involving Crockett. She previously made headlines for suggesting that Democrats should “punch” their opponents and implied that Senator Ted Cruz “has to be knocked over the head, like hard.” Additionally, Crockett called for Elon Musk to be “taken down” during discussions about protests against Tesla.
This incident underscores the hypocrisy within the Democratic Party, which frequently preaches tolerance, inclusion, and support for marginalized groups, yet now engages in ableist rhetoric against a paraplegic governor. The same party that claims to champion the rights of minorities and those with disabilities appears willing to abandon those principles when targeting political opponents.
