The Communist Party USA shared in a recent interview that the Communist Party USA has seen a surge in membership rates over the last several years.
The interview, shared by Communist Party USA (CPUSA) Co-Chair Joe Sims, featured CPUSA member and co-chair of the New York Young Communist League, Brooklyn Crawford, explaining to Sims the membership rates seen by the group. Crawford detailed that the membership surge began “during the first election of Donald Trump and also following the candidacy of Bernie Sanders.” She went on to ask how the party may continue to develop.
“We’ve always seen the young generation as the spark of the revolutionary movement, and that’s where the energy comes from. That’s where the motion is. We celebrate that and we want to encourage it,” Sims said. “We say who we are and what we are and nobody, you know, gets upset. We have to organize the party in that tradition and in that spirit.”
Sims went on to add, “And another part of that is bringing the younger comrades into our leadership.”
According to the video’s description, 20,000 CPUSA members have entered the party over the last several years.
Meanwhile, a new poll from CBS/YouGov revealed that more than a third of Gen Z Americans have a favorable view of socialism. When asked what their “view of socialism” was, 9% of respondents said “very positive” and 26% said “somewhat positive.” Twenty-eight percent of Gen Z respondents said they held a “very negative” view of socialism, and 14% were “somewhat negative.”
Despite the shift toward socialism compared to previous generations, younger Americans still hold onto capitalism, with 21% saying they hold a “very positive” view of the economic system and 25% saying they hold a “somewhat positive” view of capitalism.
