China is rapidly advancing its naval capabilities, with plans to construct the world’s largest aircraft carrier, potentially surpassing the U.S. Navy’s USS Gerald R. Ford. Satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies reveals significant construction activity at China’s Dalian Shipyard, indicating preparations for a new carrier equipped with four catapults, similar to the Ford-class supercarriers.
The proposed Type 004 aircraft carrier is expected to be nuclear-powered, marking a significant shift from China’s conventionally powered carriers. This development would enhance the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) operational range and endurance, aligning with China’s ambitions to project power globally.
China’s current carrier fleet includes the Liaoning and Shandong, both operational, and the Fujian, which began sea trials in May 2024. The Fujian, a Type 003 carrier, is China’s first to feature a catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) system, allowing for more efficient aircraft launches. The anticipated Type 004 is expected to build upon this technology, incorporating electromagnetic catapults and arresting gears for operating advanced aircraft, including unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs).
China’s shipbuilding industry has demonstrated remarkable efficiency, completing new vessels in less than six months. This rapid expansion reflects China’s strategy to integrate civilian industrial capabilities with military objectives, significantly enhancing its naval power.
Liu Pengyu, the spokesperson for the PRC in Washington, commented on these developments saying China’s naval expansive is “purely defensive in nature.” According to Pengyu, China would “never engage in aggression and expansion, but we will never give up our legitimate rights and interests, and we will resolutely counter all threats and challenges.”
While China aggressively builds its military strength, the U.S. must prioritize defense readiness, expand its naval capabilities, and counter growing Chinese influence. Weak leadership and appeasement will only embolden adversaries, while a strong, well-prepared military is essential to safeguarding American interests and deterring threats from hostile regimes.
