China announced that it is raising tariffs on U.S. goods from 84% to 125%.
“The US alternately raising abnormally high tariffs on China has become a numbers game, which has no practical economic significance, and will become a joke in the history of the world economy,” a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said in a statement. “If the US continues to impose tariffs on Chinese goods exported to the US, China will ignore it.”
“There are no winners in a tariff war and going against the world will only result in self-isolation,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said of the development, marking his first public statement on the matter.
China’s Ministry of Finance said the tariff will “be adjusted from 84% to 125% from April 12, 2025.”
“Even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy,” the statement read. “At the current tariff level, there is no market acceptance for US goods exported to China. If the US continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it. However, if the US insists on continuing to substantially infringe on China’s interests, China will resolutely counterattack and fight to the end.”
The statement comes as the United States increased its tariffs on China to 145%.
Trump announced on Wednesday: “Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately.”
The additional 20% to bring the tariffs to 145% is due to separate fentanyl and illegal immigration-related duties from February.
Earlier this week, China announced it would “fight to the end” against Trump’s tariffs.
