Catholic Pro-Life Reporter Assaulted in NYC During Interview

A Catholic pro-life activist was violently punched in the face Thursday while conducting a street interview in Harlem, New York City. Savannah Craven Antao, 23, was representing the pro-life organization Live Action when she was attacked by a woman during a discussion about abortion.

Live Action released footage of the incident and confirmed that Antao was struck during the conversation by a woman who became enraged over Antao’s pro-life stance. A photo shared by Live Action President Lila Rose showed Antao with blood running down her face. Antao was later treated at a local hospital and received two stitches.

The New York Police Department confirmed the assault occurred around 6:05 p.m. near West 126th Street and Lenox Avenue. Police said the suspect, described as an “unknown individual,” punched Antao with a closed fist, causing a laceration. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Antao told Catholic News Agency that the woman she was interviewing admitted she knew abortion kills a baby and understood the procedures involved. Antao challenged her comments about supporting the killing of abused or foster care children, after which the woman became physically violent.

“I had absolutely no time to see that it was coming,” Antao said.

Her husband, Henry Antao, was present and stepped in to protect her from further assault. The couple immediately called 911 and gave police a photo and description of the attacker.

Henry Antao issued a statement emphasizing the importance of their mission: “We are pro-life activists because ending abortion and protecting babies from the violence that Planned Parenthood commits is the most important issue of our lifetime.”

Live Action praised Antao’s courage. “Her bravery in the face of violence is heroic,” said Lila Rose. “We are grateful she is safe and receiving support. No one should ever face physical assault for expressing their views in public.”

Despite the attack, Antao affirmed she would continue her pro-life advocacy. “I know that that woman was hurting inside… and that’s why I still want to pray for her,” she said.

Antao is raising funds for personal security via her YouTube channel to continue her street activism safely.
