Castro’s Grandson Wants a Deal with Trump

Fidel Castro’s grandson, Sandro Castro, told CNN that if it were up to him, he would want to make a deal with President Trump and declared that many Cubans “want to be capitalist, not communist.”

“There are many people in Cuba that think in a capitalistic way,” Castro said. “There are many people here who want to have capitalism with sovereignty.”

He went on to criticize Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, saying, “I would not say he is doing a good job. For me he is not doing a good job.” He noted that Díaz-Canel’s leadership is “hurting our lives.”

Castro later reiterated that “[m]any Cubans would have liked to have been capitalist. I think the majority of Cubans want to be capitalist, not communist. That has created differences, a hatred which is not productive.”

While he told CNN that he does not like “threats” made by President Trump, he would support a deal should the president aim to open Cuba’s economy.

President Trump said during the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Florida, that Cuba is “at the end of the line.”

“As we achieve a historic transformation in Venezuela, we’re also looking forward to the great change that will soon be coming to Cuba. Cuba’s at the end of the line,” he said. “They’re very much at the end of the line. They have no money, they have no oil. They have a bad philosophy. They have a bad regime that’s been bad for a long time. And they used to get the money from Venezuela. They get the oil from Venezuela, but they don’t have any money from Venezuela. They don’t have any oil.”

In February, Trump floated a “friendly takeover” of Cuba.
