Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he will be creating a “state unit” meant to combat propaganda.

- The tax-funded “S.M.A.R.T.E.R” Plan will seek to push back against his view of disinformation through a newly proposed Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications, MRCTV reported.
- “One America News… [is] perhaps one of the great disinformation networks in America,” Newsom said. “Not just referring to Newsmax or the prime time propaganda lineup at Fox News.”
- The governor said due to these networks reporting “misinformation” people are “losing their lives.”

“And we continue to ask these outlets promoting misinformation to stop. People, quite literally, have lost their lives because of that promotion.”
BACKGROUND:
- This speech comes just one month after Newsom was spotted maskless alongside other Democratic leaders at the NFC Championship game, violating his own mask mandate across the state of California.
- Photos of Newsom maskless sparked outrage among parents who called attention to the fact that California schools currently were under some of the strictest mandates in the country while the governor went without a facial covering.
