California Ballot Measure Requiring Parental Notification of Child’s Gender Identity Fails

A policy that would have mandated California public schools notify parents of their child’s gender identity changes failed to get the required number of signatures to appear on the ballot.

Protect Kids California, the group behind the measure, announced that the policy failed.

“While it is unfortunate we did not have enough signatures to make the 2024 ballot, we will build off this momentum to continue to fight for the principles set forth in the Protect Kids of California Act,” they wrote in a statement on X.

“Our message is simple. Schools shouldn’t keep secrets from parents; we should protect girls’ sports and private spaces at school; and we should protect kids from unproven, life-altering and often sterilizing medical procedures. We vow to continue fighting for these principles,” the organization said.

The group obtained 400,000 signatures out of the necessary 546,651.

The policy faced difficulty after California Attorney General Rob Banta called the initiative “Restricts Rights of Transgender Youth.”

Parents Defending Education previously published a list that details more than 1,000 school districts across the country that “openly state that district personnel can or should keep a student’s transgender status hidden from parents.”

The number “keeps growing across the country,” the group’s president, Nicole Neily, told Just the News.
