Boston Mayor to Testify on Sanctuary City Policies

Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu will testify before Congress as part of its investigation into sanctuary policies.

Wu requested that her February 11 date be pushed back to accommodate her “personal circumstance of just having given birth.”

“We have been in touch with the Oversight Committee and I have let them know that I do plan to participate and we are taking the request very seriously, in terms of producing information and being responsive,” Wu told reporters. “The timeline is quite fast, especially given my personal circumstance of just having given birth not too long ago, and staying in touch with my doctor of what makes sense from a recovery perspective.”

“We’re very proud that Boston is the safest major city in the country,” she said. “We have a lot to share about what has been working here and we look forward to being able to get into the details of that.”

In January, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent letters to Democratic Mayors Eric Adams of New York City, Brandon Johnson of Chicago , Mike Johnston of Denver, and Wu of Boston, requesting information pertaining to sanctuary city policies.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States and their impact on public safety and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the immigration laws of the United States,” Comer wrote in the letters. “Sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided and obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe.”
