White House officials claimed this week that President Biden stands by his remarks that climate change is the “only existential threat.”

QUICK FACTS:
  • White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby on Monday defended President Joe Biden’s comments that climate change is “more frightening than a nuclear war” and is “the only existential threat” the world faces, even amid conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and now Israel and Hamas.
  • “Climate change is an existential threat. It actually threatens and is capable of wiping out all human life on Earth over time,” Kirby said in an interview with Fox News’ host Martha MacCallum. “I don’t know how much more existential you can get than that. But that doesn’t mean that we walk away from our obligations or our national security interests in very dangerous parts of the world.”
  • When MacCallum confronted Kirby over Biden’s remarks about climate change being more serious than war, the coordinator said such claims represent “science” and “fact.”
  • “We’ve got broad national security commitments literally globally,” Kirby continued. “And we’ve got to mind all of them at the same time. You mentioned two of them, obviously, Israel right now. Certainly, Ukraine over the last almost two years now. We are a big enough and powerful enough and effective enough nation to be able to look after all of these disparate national security threats, and one of them, absolutely, is climate change.”
PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN ON CLIMATE CHANGE BEING MORE “FRIGHTENING” THAN WAR:

“The only existential threat humanity faces, even more frightening than a nuclear war, is global warming going above 1.5 degrees in the next ten years,” Biden said in a clip played by MacCallum.

BACKGROUND:
  • In August, Biden said in an interview that “practically speaking” he had already declared a climate emergency.
  • “I’ve already done that,” he said to The Weather Channel, which had asked whether he was prepared to declare a climate emergency.
  • “We’re moving,” Biden added, stating that climate change “is the existential threat to humanity.”
  • When pressed on whether he had already declared an emergency, Biden said, “Practically speaking, yes.”
