Michael Bennet Colorado Governor Race Heats Up for 2026

Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) has launched his campaign for Colorado governor in the 2026 race, joining an increasingly crowded Democratic field. His announcement included sharp attacks on former President Donald Trump and emphasized Colorado’s rising cost of living and struggling public services.

Bennet, a former Denver Public Schools superintendent and longtime U.S. senator, received endorsements from key Democrat leaders in the state, including Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. His entry into the race sets up a high-profile primary battle with current Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who announced his candidacy in January.

In his campaign video, Bennet criticized Trump’s economic policies, accusing the former president of damaging both the economy and democracy. He framed his run as a fight to restore opportunity in Colorado, citing growing costs in housing, groceries, and childcare. He also pointed to deficiencies in healthcare and education as major state challenges.

Bennet’s record aligns with Colorado Democrats’ recent policy shifts. Under Democratic leadership, the state expanded public benefits to illegal aliens, offering access to driver’s licenses, healthcare, and other taxpayer-funded services. These programs are expected to cost millions and mirror policies in states like California and New York.

The influx of illegal immigration has become a top issue among Colorado voters, with polls showing it surpassing other concerns in the 2024 election cycle. Despite this, state Democrats have used their legislative majority to push forward bills advancing abortion access and transgender rights, reinforcing their progressive agenda.

Bennet previously admitted that Democrats have lost touch with working Americans. He was also among the few Democrats who accurately predicted a Trump victory over President Joe Biden. His criticisms of Trump’s economic doctrine contrast sharply with recent arguments that Trump’s policies aim to rebalance global burdens and prioritize American prosperity.

With no Republican winning statewide office for years, Bennet’s campaign adds momentum to the Democratic establishment. However, rising voter concerns over immigration, cost of living, and progressive legislation may shift the political climate leading into 2026.
