Amazon Prime to Stream Show Depicting the Story of King David

The Christian groups behind “The Chosen” and “Jesus Revolution” are now focusing on a project portraying the life of King David.

“House of David” will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The show’s logline reads, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “House of David follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king. As Saul’s fury grows, David navigates love, violence and politics in the court of the very man he’s destined to replace. Two kings. One Kingdom. The outcome is war.”

Those involved with the project include Jon Erwin of “Jesus Revolution,” Dallas Jenkins of “The Chosen” and Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten from Netflix.

Amazon MGM Studios‘ head of TV Vernon Sanders said in a statement, “When we met with Jon, Kelly and Dallas, their clear and passionate vision for The Wonder Project and their ambition to nurture universal stories of love, triumph and spirituality moved us. He added that Amazon MGM Studios is “very excited about the scope, scale, and storytelling involved with House of David and look forward to sharing this epic and many others with our global Prime Video customers.”

The purpose of The Wonder Project is to “create a trusted brand that serves the faith and values audience globally with movies and TV shows they didn’t know were possible,” Erwin said in a December press release. “We will achieve this by giving the creatives dedicated to this audience (including myself) a level of freedom and resources they’ve never had before.”

Merryman Hoogstraten said The Wonder Project will “flood the world with hope.”

“I am convinced we can make a difference by telling stories that restore hope in things worth believing in – family, community, God, and America,” she stated. “We will do this at scale for a global audience that seeks faith and values-driven entertainment. And we will give the audience a brand they can call their own.”

Merryman Hoogstraten told Christian Headlines that Amazon’s support for the project has been a surprise.

“We’ve been blown away by Amazon’s commitment to help us do this — both through the significant resources they are dedicating and their trust in us to tell these stories authentically to our audience,” she said.
