All-American Solar Manufacturing Usurps Chinese Dominance

T1 Energy and Corning have signed a supply agreement to produce a fully domestic solar panel manufacturing chain in an effort to distance the market from China.

According to the agreement, Corning will provide T1 with solar wafers, which will then be used to create solar cells and arranged into modules.

“This landmark supply chain agreement with Corning will help invigorate America with scalable, reliable, low-cost energy,” said T1’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Daniel Barcelo. “This is American companies building in America and protecting American energy security. The U.S. needs to establish critical energy supply chains built on domestic capacity and industrial know-how. Together with Corning, we intend to accelerate America’s ability to manufacture leading-edge solar solutions, support a total of nearly 6,000 American jobs, and promote American energy independence.”

Corning Vice President and General Manager of Solar and Chairman and CEO of Hemlock Semiconductor AB Ghosh said Corning is “proud to help meet the growing need for solar products made in the United States,” explaining that the agreement “underscores the strong demand for high-quality, American-made solar technologies.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January to unleash American energy and “establish our position as the leading producer and processor of non-fuel minerals, including rare earth minerals, which will create jobs and prosperity at home, strengthen supply chains for the United States and its allies, and reduce the global influence of malign and adversarial states.”

The order further called for protecting the “United States’s economic and national security and military preparedness by ensuring that an abundant supply of reliable energy is readily accessible in every State and territory of the Nation.”
