Alaskan Airlines Adopts Gender-Neutral Flight Attendant Uniforms

The Washington-based airline company will now incorporate gender-neutral uniform pieces for their work attire.

QUICK FACTS:
  • The Hill recently reported that Alaska Airlines will retire its old “stewardess” kits and are now introducing more gender-neutral uniforms.
  • Additionally, the airline will remove restrictions on fingernail polish, piercings and tattoos, allowing employees the option to wear personal pronoun pins.
  • Alaska Airlines previously required flight attendants to wear traditional male and female uniforms, including skirts for women and pants for men.
ALASKA AIRLINES DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (DEI:

“I know firsthand what it feels like not to be seen, heard, or able to bring your authentic self to work.”

BACKGROUND:
  • The move comes as the airline company has been accused of discriminating against nonbinary individuals and the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington claimed its policies were violating the Title IX statute of the Civil Rights Act.
  • “These rigid, binary uniform requirements are more than a mere inconvenience,” the ACLU wrote in a letter. “By forcing our client and countless other employees to adhere to Alaska Airlines’ preferred vision of how men and women should appear, the uniform policy demeans employees who do not conform to gender stereotypes and materially interferes with their ability to do their jobs under equal terms and conditions as other employees.”
