North Korea Tests AI-Powered Suicide Drones Under Kim Jong Un’s Supervision

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen tests of newly developed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered suicide drones, emphasizing the importance of unmanned systems and AI in modernizing the nation’s armed forces.

State media reported that Kim inspected upgraded reconnaissance drones capable of detecting various tactical targets and monitoring enemy activities on land and at sea. He stated, “The field of unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence should be top-prioritized and developed in modernizing the armed forces.”

Photographs released by state media depict Kim observing a fixed-wing drone targeting a tank-shaped object, culminating in an explosion upon impact. Additionally, Kim was seen alongside an unmanned surveillance aircraft resembling the U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk, indicating North Korea’s intent to enhance its aerial reconnaissance capabilities.

These developments follow North Korea’s recent unveiling of its first nuclear-powered submarine, signaling a continued focus on advancing military technology. The regime’s pursuit of AI-driven weaponry raises concerns about regional stability and the potential escalation of military tensions.

Analysts note that while the introduction of an airborne early-warning aircraft could augment North Korea’s existing land-based radar systems, the operational effectiveness of such equipment remains uncertain. South Korea’s military has expressed skepticism, suggesting the aircraft may be susceptible to interception.
