Gov. Abbott Launches Violent Crimes Task Force in Houston, Promises Expansion Statewide

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the formation of a “violent crimes task force” in Harris County, a major initiative that brings together state, county, and local law enforcement to aggressively target repeat criminal offenders. The task force will begin operations in the Houston area and is expected to become a model for similar efforts across Texas.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Abbott described the initiative as “a Texas-size effort” aimed at restoring public safety in neighborhoods plagued by violent crime. “This is an effort to crack down on dangerous repeat offenders in the Houston area using the full might of our most elite law enforcement officers,” Abbott said.

The task force includes officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement entities who will focus on high-crime areas through what officials describe as “saturated patrols.” DPS Director Freeman Martin emphasized that residents can expect to see a heavier uniform presence and increased patrol activity where repeat offenders are most active.

Abbott said the program may expand across the state, targeting urban, suburban, and rural areas alike. “We will look at every corner of the state to make sure we’re making it as safe as possible,” he stated.

While some Houston neighborhoods have experienced rising crime, others, like Greater Greenspoint, have seen significant declines. Abbott praised Houston Mayor John Whitmire for his efforts but stressed that more work needs to be done.

Abbott also highlighted the state’s reformed bail laws, passed in June, which limit eligibility for cashless bond. In November, Texans will vote on Proposition 3, which would further restrict bail for individuals charged with violent or sexual offenses.

The governor aims to make the task force a national model for public safety and confirmed that Texas will continue taking the lead on law and order initiatives.
