The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is conducting a review of electromagnetic fields, the agency announced. Because such technology is part of daily life, the agency believes an examination of the matter is necessary.
The agency issued a Request for Information (RFI), urging the general public, scientists, industry professionals, and others to submit information on potential health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), radiofrequency (RF) radiation, and wireless radiation. HHS is specifically seeking answers for exposures linked to mobile phones, Wi-Fi, smart meters, wireless infrastructure, wearable technologies, wireless medical devices, 5G, 6G, satellite communications, smart homes, autonomous vehicles, and other technologies.
“Wireless technologies are part of daily life, and our science must keep pace,” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement. “The MAHA Strategy directed HHS to examine electromagnetic radiation and health research, and we are acting on that directive. I encourage scientists, physicians, industry, public health experts, workers, parents, and citizens to bring us the best available evidence so we can identify the gaps and focus federal research where it is needed most.”
According to a document submitted to the Federal Register, “Public concern about potential health effects from RF/EMF exposure has increased, particularly in relation to children, schools, and long-term cumulative exposure.”
“HHS is interested in clear, balanced, and evidence-informed information about RF/EMF exposure that can support decision-making, identify research priorities, and inform practical strategies to reduce unnecessary exposure where appropriate,” the document adds.
The Department of War is also examining electromagnetics in warfighting. In its National Defense Strategy from earlier this year, the Pentagon noted the necessity of reevaluating defense in the wake of increasing military threats as countries grow in their “conventional strike and space, cyber, electromagnetic warfare capabilities.”
