The United Kingdom is providing migrants with a booklet instructing them not to rape or sexually harass residents.
The booklet, called “Understanding behaviours and expectations in the UK: a guide for asylum seekers,” issues a reminder that both parties must consent to sexual activities and that those who are unconscious are not in a position to consent or agree to such an activity.
“We understand that coming to a new country can be difficult, and that laws and customs here may be different from your home country,” the UK Home Office said in a statement. “In the UK, there are laws that protect everyone’s safety, dignity and rights. It is important that you understand them, because not following UK law can have serious consequences. You could get in trouble with the police, lose your asylum support, or it could affect your asylum claim.”
“If you have sex with someone without their consent, this is called rape. Rape is a serious crime in the UK. You could go to prison, lose your support and accommodation, and it will affect your asylum claim,” the Home Office added.
The government went on to remind the masses that the UK supports gender equality and that women “do not need permission from a husband, father, or brother” to do various activities, such as work, study, travel, and make their own choices.
Meanwhile, a recent U.K. grooming report found that a “significant number” of the ongoing police operations into exploitation cases “involve suspects who are non-UK nationals and/or who are claiming asylum in the UK.”
