Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced that he intends to introduce a war powers resolution to limit President Trump’s involvement in Iran.
“The renewal of fighting in Iran demonstrates the problem with Trump’s lack of strategy, the vagueness of the deal to make a deal, and the belligerence of an Iranian regime that feels it has the upper hand,” Schiff said. “This week, I’ll introduce a new War Powers Resolution to force the Senate to vote on Trump’s war and the price spikes it is causing.”
He shared the news on NBC’s Meet the Press, where he told Kristen Welker that President Trump took action in Iran”not because we were attacked or because there was an imminent threat of attack, but because he chose to do so.”
“It seems the administration is just fighting to get us back to something that looks a lot like the [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] JCPOA,” he added. “And I think President Trump’s tearing up of that agreement will go down as one of the gravest mistakes of foreign policy in history.”
Last month, the Senate passed a House-backed resolution to limit Trump’s action in Iran. The resolution directs President Trump to “remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran…unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific congressional authorization for use of military force against Iran.”
Republican Sens. Susan Collins (ME), Bill Cassidy (LA), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Rand Paul (KY) supported the measure. Democrat Sen. John Fetterman (PA) opposed it. Two Republicans, Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY) and Dave McCormick (PA), did not vote.
