Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) introduced a bill requiring the national motto to be displayed on federal buildings. The “In God We Trust Act” calls for the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA) to display the motto in such buildings.
“For nearly 70 years, our national motto, ‘In God We Trust,’ has served as a declaration of faith that has guided our nation,” Miller said in a statement to The Christian Post. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, I’m proud to introduce the House companion to Senator Hawley’s ‘In God We Trust Act’ to permanently display our national motto in every federal building across this country. We will never apologize for being one nation that places its trust in Almighty God.”
The bill reads: “Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Administrator of General Services shall inscribe or display in a place of prominence on every public building the national motto of the United States, as described in section 302 of title 36, United States Code.”
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced his bill to require the national motto’s display in September. “Our national motto goes all the way back to the days of President Lincoln. Congress adopted ‘In God We Trust’ as our national motto in 1956 during the rise of atheist communism, and it remains our national motto today,” Hawley said in a statement. “The In God We Trust Act will ensure that the federal government—as well as the American people for whom it works—never forgets the ultimate source of the liberty and prosperity this country enjoys. As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this bill would restore faith to its rightful place in the halls of government.”
