Proposed UN Resolution Threatens Iran

A draft resolution from the United Nations threatens to impose sanctions on Iran unless it opens the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution, co-sponsored by the United States and Gulf nations, demands that Iran “immediately participate in and enable” the United Nations to establish a humanitarian area in the strait, the Associated Press reports.

The new proposal comes as the United States conducts Operation Freedom. If Iran does not comply with the demands, if adopted, then “effective measures that are commensurate with the gravity of the situation, including sanctions” will be implemented.

The propsal also “welcomes ongoing efforts to deconflict and coordinate safe and secure transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz, expresses support for ongoing efforts to seek a durable peace in the region, and encourages member states in the region to strengthen dialogue and consultations in this regard.”

In a statement on the draft resolution, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “At President Trump’s direction, the United States, alongside Bahrain and our Gulf partners, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, drafted a UN Security Council Resolution to defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

“The draft resolution requires Iran to cease attacks, mining, and tolling,” the statement explains. “It demands that Iran disclose the number and location of the sea mines it has laid and cooperate with efforts to remove them, while also supporting the establishment of a humanitarian corridor.”

“The United States looks forward to this resolution being voted on in the coming days and to receiving support from Security Council members and a broad base of co-sponsors.”
