The Minnesota Freedom Caucus announced that impeachment hearings for Governor Tim Walz (D) and Attorney General Keith Ellison will occur next week. The hearings will take place in the Minnesota Capitol Building on April 15th, at 10:15 AM.
Impeachment resolutions for the state officials were introduced last month. According to the resolution against Walz, the governor has “engaged in corrupt conduct in office by violating his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the laws of this state.” It says that Walz knowingly concealed or permitted “others to conceal widespread fraud within Minnesota state-administered programs despite repeated warnings, audits, reports, and public indicators of systematic abuse.”
The resolution further declares that Walz “violated his constitutional oath of office by actions and omissions that interfered with lawful oversight, investigation, or corrective action related to fraud in Minnesota state agencies” and “failed to uphold his constitutional oath of office by placing political consideration above lawful administration, thereby breaching the public trust.”
The impeachment efforts come as a massive fraud scandal has plagued Minnesota. A viral video shared widely on social media features a Minnesota daycare provider alleging systemic abuse within state-funded childcare assistance programs. The provider claimed that some centers were receiving payments for children who were not actually present, echoing long-standing conservative concerns about weak oversight in social spending programs. Republicans argue the footage reflects a broader pattern of mismanagement rather than an isolated incident.
Amidst the Walz declared that he will “never again” seek elected office. In an interview with MS Now, he stated, “I have no political considerations. I will never run for an elected office again.”
