Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA) is demanding that illegal immigrants get reparations from the “trauma” experienced under the Trump administration.
“We need real accountability because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted,” she said. “They need to be brought before us and they need to be held account for the trauma that they have created and we are going to have to have some form of reparation for the kids and the families that have been traumatized through all of this.”
The comments were made during a hearing titled, “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Attack on Our Children.”
Jayapal faced backlash for her comments, with one social media user, presidential appointee James Hutton, writing, “What a concept. Jayapal suggests illegal aliens should get reparations essentially for being illegal aliens.”
Democrats are demanding that immigration enforcement officers have new restrictions amid ongoing criticism of agents’ deployment to American cities.
The White House offered ICE reforms in a concessions letter to Democrats amid funding negotiations. The proposals given to Democrats include the expanded use of body cameras by DHS law enforcement in immigration operations. “The Administration will limit civil immigration enforcement activities at certain sensitive locations, subject to a narrow carve-out for immediate needs like national security, flight risks, and public safety,” the letter adds. “Sensitive locations include places like hospitals and schools, which is current practice.”
DHS law enforcement would also enforce visible officer identification and will “require such officers to clearly verbalize their agency and identification upon request when engaging in official duties, consistent with standard law enforcement practices.”
