A gunman is now deceased after a shooting occurred at Old Dominion University in Virginia. Two are injured.
According to an alert from the university, just before 10:49 a.m local time, a gunman opened fire, injuring two individuals. “Old Dominion University Police, Norfolk Police and emergency personnel responded immediately. The gunman is now deceased. The injured were transported to a local hospital,” the university said, noting that classes are canceled for the remainder of the day. The alert added that as of 11:43 a.m., there is no longer a threat.
As the active threat was reported, the university urged students to follow “Run-Hide-Fight protocols.”
At the time of writing, the university’s latest update is an “all clear notification.”
“The emergency at Constant Hall has ended,” the notice says. “There is no longer an active threat to the campus community. Avoid the area in and around Constant Hall where emergency officials continue to work.”
The City of Norfolk said in a separate alert that the city and university police are “handling an active situation on the campus of Old Dominion University.”
A sophomore student told local news outlet WAVY that he was taking a test when the shooting occurred. Logan Hayes explained that he “heard about a multitude of gunshots go off and people just screaming.”
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D) wrote on X that she is “closely monitoring the on-campus shooting at Old Dominion University. I have spoken with university leadership. My Administration remains in close contact with local emergency responders as state support is being mobilized to assist ODU and Norfolk.”
In a subsequent post, she said, “I encourage students, faculty, and community members to continue following guidance issued by local law enforcement. I thank all first responders on the scene.”
