Law enforcement officials have raided the home of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. His office, as well as a site in Miami connected to the investigation, are also being searched.
Details surrounding the search remain unknown. FBI Los Angeles said the affidavit in support of the searches is under seal. “We can confirm that the FBI is serving a court-authorized warrant at those locations,” the office said in a statement to NBC Los Angeles. “However, the affidavit in support of the warrant has been sealed by the court and we, therefore, have no further comment.”
In December, Carvalho announced that enrollment decreased by 4% compared to the previous year’s statistics. He argued that immigration enforcement operations have led to a “climate of fear” around the district.
Last year, Carvalho faced a lawsuit by LAUSD students and former Superintendent Austin Beutner, which alleges that $76.7 million in Proposition 28 funds intended for arts and music education have been misused. The filing claimed that hundreds of thousands of students have been denied access to expanded arts and music instruction, violating the law.
“These declines reflect a climate of fear and instability created by ongoing immigration crackdowns, which disrupt family stability, housing, and mobility,” said LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho in a statement reported by ABC 7. “These fears are now exacerbating pre-existing factors that were already driving statewide enrollment declines – including falling birth rates, rising housing costs, and broader economic pressures. When families are afraid to be seen, or when they cannot afford to remain in their communities, they are less likely to enroll, reenroll, or stay in public schools.”
“Our responsibility is to ensure every child – regardless of where they were born – feels safe in our schools,” he added at the time. “We will continue to stand firmly with our immigrant communities and protect every student’s right to a welcoming, stable, and supportive education.”
