Former British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested. Mandelson was fired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in September after his email exchanges with Jeffrey Epstein were released.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced Mandelson’s departure soon after the emails were released. “In light of the additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the Prime Minister has asked the Foreign Secretary to withdraw him as Ambassador,” the office’s statement read. “The emails show that the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment,” the statement continued. “In particular Peter Mandelson’s suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged is new information.”
Mandelson has now been arrested, with the London Metropolitan Police stating that the arrest stems from “suspicion of misconduct in public office.”
His arrest comes just days after former Prince Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in connection with his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, King Charles III said he learned about the matter with “deepest concern.”
“What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course,” he added. “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
