California Bill Gives Millions to Planned Parenthood

A California budget bill would provide $90 million to abortion providers and reproductive healthcare entities such as Planned Parenthood. Under Senate Bill 106, “up to $90,000,000 is available for funding grants to family planning providers for the provision of family planning services and family planning-related services.”

While the bill does not specifically list Planned Parenthood, Senate President Pro Tempore Monique Limón and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, both Democrats, said in a statement that the funding is intended for the abortion provider.

“The California legislature will work tirelessly to ensure Californians have the proper health care they need. This includes championing access to care for contraception, childcare, cancer prevention, and family planning,” said Limón. “These services are essential for all Californians. I am thankful for Speaker Rivas’ partnership to keep Planned Parenthood open in California.”

Rivas condemned the Trump administration’s crackdown on “abortion access, family-planning, and reproductive health,” noting that “California will continue to act.”

Five Planned Parenthood clinics shut down across California in July following the One Big Beautiful Bill, which prohibits Medicaid funding for health centers that both provide abortions and received more than $800,000 in federal reimbursements the previous year.

In October, Governor Gavin Newsom (D) said the state would move to allocate $140 million to Planned Parenthood to replace the lost federal funding. “California is a reproductive freedom state, and this latest investment continues to show our belief in protecting access to essential health care in times of distress,” Newsom stated at the time. “Trump’s efforts to defund Planned Parenthood put all our communities at risk as people seek basic health care from these community providers.”
