Vice President JD Vance is expected to skip the Munich Security Conference, Bloomberg reports, citing information from an anonymous source. In 2025, Vance rebuked Europe for stepping away from “some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America.”
“Free speech, I fear, is in retreat and in the interests of comedy, my friends, but also in the interest of truth, I will admit that sometimes the loudest voices for censorship have come not from within Europe, but from within my own country, where the prior administration threatened and bullied social media companies to censor so-called misinformation,” Vance explained last year.
“I believe there is nothing more urgent than mass migration,” he further stated. Vance explained that mass migration is the “result of a series of conscious decisions made by politicians all over the continent and others across the world over the span of a decade.”
The recently-revealed national security strategy similarly criticized Europe’s policies, which the strategy states risks “civilizational erasure.”
“The larger issues facing Europe include activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating strife, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities and self-confidence,” the strategy explains, noting that if the current pattern continues, the “continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less.”
“We want Europe to remain European, to regain its civilizational self-confidence, and to abandon its failed focus on regulatory suffocation,” the strategy declares.
