Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, President Trump’s newly appointed special envoy to Greenland, declared that he aims to “make Greenland a part of the U.S.”
Announcing the appointment on December 21, President Trump wrote on Truth Social,
“I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World. Congratulations Jeff!”
“Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S,” Landry wrote in response. “This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!”
”We have said it before. Now, we say it again. National borders and the sovereignty of states are rooted in international law,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a joint statement obtained by the Associated Press. “They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.”
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the U.S. shall not take over Greenland,” the statement added. “We expect respect for our joint territorial integrity.”
President Trump declared earlier this year that the U.S. will “get it one way or the other,” prompting criticism from Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders. We are not Americans, we are not Danes because we are Greenlanders,” Egede wrote on Facebook. “This is what the Americans and their leaders need to understand, we cannot be bought and we cannot be ignored – The future of the country will be determined by us in our country, of course.”
“Greenland is ours,” he said. “We do not want to be Americans, nor Danes, we are Greenlanders. The Americans and their leaders must understand that. We are not for sale and cannot just be taken. Our future is decided by us in Greenland.”
