In a recent interview on Meet the Press, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he saw “nothing … to suggest” that former President Joe Biden could not serve through January 2029. He noted that in his personal interactions with the president, no signs emerged that suggested otherwise.
When asked by host Kristen Welker if he believed Biden was capable of serving a full term through 2029, Newsom responded: “Yeah … there was no interaction I had that suggested otherwise.”
Newsom, a Democrat, also praised Biden’s tenure, calling him “one of the most successful presidents in the last century.” The governor said his focus remained on preventing the return of Donald Trump rather than micromanaging the president’s future.
The exchange comes amid ongoing questions within the Democratic Party about leadership, succession and the health and readiness of senior figures. While Newsom offered his personal confidence in Biden’s capacity, he did not delve into broader concerns about public perceptions of the former president’s fitness for office.
