Secretary of State Marco Rubio has halted issuing work visas for foreign commercial truck drivers following a fatal crash in Florida. Conservative experts commend the move as a necessary step to protect American lives and jobs.
Secretary Rubio declared on social media that the U.S. is “pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers,” citing rising safety risks and harm to American truckers’ livelihoods.
Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies called the action “long overdue,” emphasizing that foreign truck drivers often lack adequate qualifications—underscored by the Florida crash involving a non-English-speaking illegal immigrant who failed both the English proficiency and road sign tests.
Lora Ries from the Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center highlighted that the pause advances both “road safety and immigration integrity.” She urged DHS and the State Department to also review existing work-authorized drivers’ credentials and revoke their benefits if warranted.
