Republicans have called for House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-KY) to have Ghislaine Maxwell testify before Congress.
“Thank you for your continued leadership on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Given the events of the past week, I respectfully request you invite Ms. Ghislaine Maxwell to testify in a public hearing before the Committee,” Burchett wrote in a letter to Comer. “Should Ms. Maxwell refuse the invitation, I encourage you to use subpoena powers. The American people have questions about the case involving Jeffrey Epstein. It is well beyond time those questions are answered.”
Burchett indicated to CNN that he does not trust the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files.
“I’m over it. It disgusts me,” Burchett said. “I’m big on clarity and transparency, and that’s a good reason people don’t trust government, either party.” When asked if he believes the DOJ is trustworthy, the representative said, “No, I don’t. I think I don’t. I don’t trust them.”
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has also demanded that Maxwell testify before Congress. Conservative personality Benny Johnson asked the senator, “Will you be in favor of Ghislaine Maxwell testifying?”
Lee responded, “Absolutely. I’ve posted on this. If she were to testify, I think she could answer a lot of questions that could help put all of this in perspective. Yes.”
The demand for a congressional testimony comes as a DOJ and FBI memo released July 7 claimed that convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein took his own life in August 2019. The memo further stated that there was “no incriminating ‘client list’” or “credible evidence” that Epstein “blackmailed prominent individuals as part of his actions.”
