Bukele Laughs at Democratic Threat

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador responded to democratic attempts to impose sanctions on him and other officials, laughing at their efforts.

In a statement on X responding to a recent bill imposing sanctions, Bukele wrote, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHA the Dems are just salty…”

The matter pertains to recently introduced legislation from Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Tim Kaine (D-VA), who claimed El Salvador has engaged in “human rights abuses” and has colluded with the Trump administration to “imprison people from the United States without due process,” a press statement explains.

According to the legislation, called the “El Salvador Accountability Act of 2025,” members of El Salvador’s government have “engaged in gross violations of internationally recognized human rights, or violated international law or international human rights standards, including in connection with the ongoing ‘state of exception’ in El Salvador” and have “engaged in the scheme, including by accepting United States taxpayer dollars, to deprive individuals residing in the United States of their rights under the Constitution of the United States.”

The bill specifically targets Bukele, his vice president, the minister of foreign relations, defense, the economy, finance, government, justice and public security, tourism, the attorney general, the president of the Central Reserve Bank, and the vice minister of justice and public security.

Van Hollen met with deported MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador earlier this year.

Bukele has also fired back at claims that Abrego Garcia was being tortured while detained, releasing a video showing the migrant seemingly in good spirits, contradicting allegations in court filings.
