Trump Tax and Spending Blitz Hits Senate Monday

Senator Katie Britt (R-AL) announced Sunday that President Donald Trump’s latest spending package is on track for a final Senate vote on Monday, barring any major delays in the chamber.

During an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Britt explained the legislative process currently unfolding. “Right now, Senator Schumer is having the entire bill read aloud,” Britt said, referencing a procedural move often used to slow down legislative action. The bill’s reading, conducted by Senate clerks, was approximately halfway completed as of Sunday afternoon and expected to finish around 3:00 a.m.

Following the reading, the Senate will enter a debate phase, with ten hours allotted for each party. “Democrats will likely use their full ten hours,” Britt noted. “Republicans may take a few hours to make the case for this great piece of legislation.”

The amendment process will follow the debate, with no limit on how many can be introduced. Britt said she anticipates “fruitful debate” and participation from both parties. As part of her Senate duties, Britt will preside over the chamber from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and encouraged viewers interested in the proceedings to tune into C-SPAN 2.

When asked directly by host Jake Tapper if the final vote will occur Monday, Britt responded, “I would think so.” The path to passage will depend on how many amendments are introduced and how long the debate continues overnight.

The bill, backed by President Trump, includes key appropriations that Republican lawmakers argue are necessary for fiscal stability and national priorities. Debate and amendment votes may continue through the night, but the expectation remains that a final decision will be reached before the Senate adjourns Monday.
