Salt Lake Protest Shooting Kills Famed Designer

Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, a 39-year-old Samoan-born fashion designer and former “Project Runway” contestant, was accidentally shot and killed during the “No Kings” protest in Salt Lake City over the weekend. Authorities confirmed that Ah Loo was struck by a peacekeeper’s bullet meant for a man brandishing a rifle, who has now been charged with murder.

Ah Loo, also known as Afa, had built a career rooted in Pacific Island heritage and community empowerment. He co-founded Create Pacific, an organization promoting indigenous artists, and became known for integrating traditional motifs like Tapa cloth and native Samoan flowers into his clothing. His design work recently included a red carpet ensemble for Auliʻi Cravalho, the voice of Moana, at the premiere of Moana 2.

Ah Loo’s death has sent shockwaves through the artistic and Pacific Islander communities. Friends and public figures, including Utah State Rep. Verona Mauga, praised his dedication to community service. Mauga described him as a man who would often volunteer his skills to clothe the underserved and uplift marginalized voices.

Police say the peacekeeper opened fire after a man with a rifle created what they described as a “dangerous situation.” The rifleman, now in custody, is being held responsible for inciting the events that led to Ah Loo’s death. Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Ah Loo leaves behind a wife and two children. A GoFundMe campaign for the family raised over $100,000 within 48 hours.

Benjamin Powell, Ah Loo’s creative partner, confirmed that the upcoming August fashion show the two had planned will go on in his honor. “The show will continue,” Powell said, “and it will reflect his vision.”
