California ‘Doubling Down’ on Climate Mandates

The State of California has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after President Donald Trump signed resolutions repealing the state’s climate-focused policies.

“Trump’s all-out assault on California continues – and this time he’s destroying our clean air and America’s global competitiveness in the process,” said Governor Gavin Newsom (D). “We are suing to stop this latest illegal action by a President who is a wholly-owned subsidiary of big polluters.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta similarly said, “The President’s reckless, politically motivated, and illegal attacks on California continue, this time with his attempt to trample on our longstanding authority to maintain more stringent clean vehicle standards.”

“The President is busy playing partisan games with lives on the line and yanking away good jobs that would bolster the economy – ignoring that these actions have life or death consequences for California communities breathing dirty, toxic air,” the statement continued. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: California will not back down. We will continue to fiercely defend ourselves from this lawless federal overreach.”

On the same day as filing the lawsuit, Newsom signed an executive order doubling down on the state’s effort to move away from fossil fuel use.

“The State of California reaffirms its commitment to accelerate the deployment of zero-emission technologies, including passenger, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles,” Newsom’s order says, directing the California Air Resources Board to “develop and propose an Advanced Clean Cars III regulation consistent with State and federal law, that reduces greenhouse gas, criteria air pollutant, and toxic emissions from passenger cars and light-duty trucks, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, to advance progress towards the deployment of clean air vehicles and technologies in the State.”

The governor’s office described Newom’s effort as “doubling down on the state’s efforts to transition away from fossil fuels.”
