The Southern Baptist Convention voted this week in favor of a resolution urging the Supreme Court to revisit the decision labeling same-sex marriage a federal right.
In a statement called “Restoring Moral Clarity through God’s Design
for Gender, Marriage, and the Family,” the denomination stated, “Law is not meant to create moral truth but to recognize and uphold it, and lawmakers are accountable to God for the policies they promote and have a God-given duty to legislate in ways that honor the truth of creation and protect the common good.”
“Legal rulings like Obergefell v. Hodges and policies that deny the biological reality of male and female are legal fictions, undermine the truth of God’s design, and lead to social confusion and injustice,” the resolution says, adding that the group calls for the “overturning of laws and court rulings, including Obergefell v. Hodges, that defy God’s design for marriage and family.”
Republican lawmakers have similarly urged the Supreme Court to overturn same-sex marriage.
Oklahoma Republican lawmakers Senator Dusty Deevers and Representative Jim Olsen filed a resolution calling for the Supreme Court to revisit the 2015 ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges and allow matters surrounding same-sex marriage to be determined by states.
Iowa State Senator Sandy Salmon (R) has also formed a resolution on same-sex marriage to be distributed to the Supreme Court. “Since court rulings are not laws and only legislatures selected by the people may pass laws, Obergefell is an illegitimate overreach,” the resolution states.
Republicans across the United States have reported a drop in support for same-sex marriage, from 55% in 2021 and 2022 to 41% in 2025.
