Mexican President Says Migrants ‘Are Not Criminals’

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the protests in Los Angeles while defending the presence of the rioters.

“Mexican men and women living in the United States are good men and women, honest people who went to the United States to seek a better life for themselves and to contribute to their families,” Sheinbaum said, as per the Associated Press. “They are not criminals; they are good, honest men and women.”

“They have the full solidarity of their government,” she stated. “We disagree with this approach to addressing the migration phenomenon. We won’t address the migration phenomenon with raids or violence.”

“We will address it by sitting down and working on comprehensive immigration reform that considers all Mexicans across the border,” Sheinbaum continued. “That is our position, and it always calls for peace and nonviolence.”

She further declared that Los Angeles “would not be what it is” without Mexicans living in the city, adding that “Mexicans will always count on our support and our demand that their human rights be respected, and they should know that, if they wish to return to Mexico, we will receive them with open arms.”

Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D) office has called for the Trump administration to rescind its “unlawful” deployment of troops.

“There is currently no need for the National Guard to be deployed in Los Angeles, and to do so in this unlawful manner and for such a lengthy period is a serious breach of state sovereignty that seems intentionally designed to inflame the situation, while simultaneously depriving the State from deploying these personnel and resources where they are truly required,” David Sapp, Newsom’s Legal Affairs Secretary wrote. “Accordingly, we ack that you immediately rescind your order and return the National Guard to its rightful control by the State of California, to be deployed as appropriate with necessary.”
