A teenager in Columbia County, Oregon, was arrested on May 22 for plotting a mass shooting and bombing at a shopping mall in Kelso, Washington. According to the FBI, the suspect had developed “detailed and imminent” plans, including the use of a chlorine bomb and firearms to attack moviegoers at the Three Rivers Mall.
The FBI began investigating the plot after receiving a tip on May 20. Authorities quickly identified the juvenile suspect, who shared violent, extremist ideology and detailed attack plans in online chats. A federal search warrant was executed two days later, leading to the arrest.
Investigators reported that the teen intended to use an improvised explosive device to incite panic, then open fire on mall patrons before committing suicide at a predetermined location. The FBI emphasized that the suspect appeared fully committed to executing the plan.
The teenager was placed under surveillance before his arrest and is currently facing state charges. The Columbia County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case. The suspect’s name has not been released due to his age.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson stated, “This plot was as serious as it gets. We, along with our partners, moved swiftly to interrupt this violent plan and to protect our community.”
Authorities are urging the public to report suspicious activity and encouraging parents to discuss online behavior with their children.
Authorities have not disclosed the teenager’s motive beyond referencing his alignment with nihilistic violent extremist ideologies. The FBI continues to investigate whether the suspect had any accomplices or if others in his online networks were aware of the plot.
Law enforcement officials are urging community vigilance, especially from parents, educators, and faith leaders, to monitor signs of radicalization or concerning behavior among youth. The FBI emphasized that early reporting by citizens played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a devastating attack.
