ActBlue Stonewalls Congress: GOP Threatens Subpoenas Over Donation Scandal

House Republicans are intensifying scrutiny of ActBlue, the Democratic Party’s primary fundraising platform, after multiple top officials declined to testify regarding alleged foreign and fraudulent donations. Chairmen James Comer (Oversight), Jim Jordan (Judiciary), and Bryan Steil (House Administration) have warned that subpoenas will be issued if cooperation is not forthcoming.

The Chairmen wrote letters to the witnesses and were sent to Danny Onorato, the lawyer representing them.

“As we have explained, the Committees are examining allegations that ActBlue, a leading political fundraising organization, allowed bad actors, including foreign actors, to exploit the company’s online platform to make fraudulent political donations… Fraudulent political donations corrupt American elections could amount to interstate criminal conduct,” the letters stated.

The investigation centers on concerns that ActBlue’s lax donor verification processes may have allowed foreign entities to contribute to U.S. political campaigns, violating federal election laws. A joint interim staff report released in April 2025 revealed that ActBlue had relaxed its fraud-prevention measures twice in 2024, despite evidence of extensive fraudulent activity on the platform.

In response to these findings, President Donald Trump signed an executive order in April 2025 directing the Department of Justice to investigate illegal “straw donor” and foreign contributions in American elections, specifically citing concerns about ActBlue’s practices.

The House committees have also sought information from Sift, a software firm contracted by ActBlue for fraud detection, to understand the extent of the platform’s vulnerabilities. Despite these efforts, ActBlue has yet to provide the requested testimony or documents, prompting the threat of subpoenas.

This is an ongoing investigation that emphasizes the need for stringent oversight of political fundraising platforms to ensure the integrity of U.S. elections.
