Montana Governor Greg Gianforte (R) is encouraging gun makers in Colorado to move to his state after Democratic Governor Jared Polis signed restrictive gun control measures.
The new law prohibits the manufacture, sale, or purchase of semi-automatic firearms using detachable magazines.
Democrat State Senator Tom Sullivan, the legislation’s sponsor, said prior to the bill’s signature, “High-capacity magazines are what put the ‘mass’ into mass shootings, which is why over a decade ago Colorado Democrats passed legislation to prohibit magazines that hold over 15 rounds of ammunition. This legislation is another in the list of policies I have worked on to develop evidence-based solutions and reduce gun violence of all types.”
In a video shared to social media, Gianforte condemned the Colorado law, saying the new law is “on top of the liberal state’s existing ban on high-capacity magazines. That’s just crazy.”
“If you needed another sign that Democrat governors are out of touch with reality, well here it is,” he said, going on to address gun manufacturers.
“To all gun manufacturers in Colorado, my question for you is simple: Do you want to move back to America?” he asked. “Montana is open for business, and home to more than 150 firearms and ammunition manufacturers, with the highest per capita in the entire country.”
Gianforte noted that Montana is a “constitutional carry state that has enacted laws outlawing discrimination against gun and ammunition manufacturers.”
“In Montana, we embrace freedom and the free enterprise system,” he declared. “Come on home to America, right here in Montana.”
In 2024, Montana was ranked as the fourth most gun-friendly state in the nation.
“As Montanans, we’re proud of our Second Amendment-protected right to keep and bear arms and know we have a responsibility to preserve it,” Gianforte said at the time. “We’ll continue to keep Montana a sanctuary for freedom and free enterprise, and we’ll always defend the rights of law-abiding Montanans.”
