A mother reported a disturbing incident at the North Kansas City YMCA after a naked biological male exposed himself to her 7-year-old daughter in the women’s locker room on April 12.
According to WDAF-TV, the mother and daughter had just completed swimming lessons, where hundreds of children were present, and entered the female locker room to change. Inside, they heard a man’s voice and, upon exiting a stall, saw a naked male with his genitals exposed.
When the mother confronted him, asking what he was doing in the women’s space, he replied, “Honey, I’m a woman.” She and her daughter immediately ran from the locker room. The mother, who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her family, stated to WDAF that this was not about gender identity but public indecency. “This is not a case of transitional status. This is an issue of somebody showing their body parts to my child in a room where she should be safe from such things,” she said.
Other YMCA members have voiced similar concerns. Angela Bush, whose 11-year-old daughter also uses the locker room, told WDAF, “My 11-year-old does use that locker room, especially after we go to the pool. In there, you either have to use the closed-off showers or try to change as quickly as possible. It’s definitely shocking and something we’ll be looking out for a little bit more.”
The YMCA of Greater Kansas City confirmed in a statement that it is cooperating with both the North Kansas City Police Department and the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office. The organization stated that individuals are allowed to use facilities that match their self-identified gender but noted the availability of four private, universal changing rooms. YMCA policy, as outlined in its Member Handbook, requires members to wear a towel, wrap, or clothing at all times in shared locker rooms.
This incident underscores a growing and deeply concerning trend: policies that allow individuals to self-identify their gender force others, often women and children, to accept a version of reality that disregards their privacy, safety, and comfort. When institutions prioritize gender ideology over biological reality, it is the most vulnerable who pay the price.
Police confirmed that the incident is under investigation as a report of indecent exposure. No further information has been released.
