New York Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi has come under scrutiny for voting against the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a bill designed to prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections. This decision appears contradictory to his public statements asserting opposition to noncitizen voting.
In a recent interview, Suozzi dismissed concerns about noncitizen voting in New York, labeling them as a “myth,” saying “I don’t want [noncitizens to vote in U.S. elections]. That’s actually a myth that Elon Musk [said] on a show where he was talking about noncitizens voting in New York — it’s just not true.”
Musk has spoken openly about the alleged voter fraud taking place in blue states across the nation as a direct result of weak immigration policies. On the Joe Rogan Experience, Musk explained, “If you end the illegal alien fraud, if you turn off that magnet, then they leave… and if that happens a massive — they will lose a massive number of Democratic voters.”
Musk went on to add, “In New York State illegal aliens can already vote in state and city elections. A lot of people don’t know that…They’re trying to stop that, but currently, I think it’s 600,000 are registered to vote, illegal aliens, in New York.”
Suozzi has taken great offense from Musk’s words. In a conversation with Fox News, Suozzi said, “I won’t accuse [Musk] of lying — I’ll just say he’s just completely inaccurate, as he is on many things.”
Despite his stated position, Suozzi voted against the SAVE Act, which mandates documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. The bill aims to reinforce existing laws that prohibit noncitizens from participating in federal elections.
Suozzi’s vote has sparked backlash from conservatives who say his actions speak louder than his words. They argue that opposing a straightforward requirement like proof of citizenship raises serious questions about his true priorities. Supporters of the bill view it as common sense—if only citizens can vote, then requiring proof shouldn’t be controversial.
