Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) declared Wednesday that President Donald Trump has already “won” in the ongoing global trade disputes, thanks to his assertive tariff strategy. Kennedy made the comments during a segment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, citing the willingness of numerous countries to negotiate as evidence of Trump’s leverage.
“President Trump has won,” Kennedy stated. “We have an opportunity here. I hope he seizes it.” When pressed by co-host Joe Scarborough about whether it was too early to declare victory, Kennedy stood firm. He pointed to the fact that 40% of the world’s 200 countries are now approaching the United States to lower their tariffs.
“Would 40% of the countries be coming to America trying to reduce their tariffs if President Trump had not done what he did? No,” Kennedy said. “Every fair-minded American knows that.”
Kennedy noted that China’s economic situation has deteriorated significantly, saying, “China’s economy is in worse shape than it’s been in 25 years. They can’t afford a trade war. They are quietly seeking a deal with President Trump.”
According to Kennedy, the international response confirms the success of the Trump administration’s tough stance on trade. He emphasized that the U.S. now has a chance to press its advantage. “Let’s pounce on it like a ninja,” he said. “I’d be on this deal like a hobo on a ham sandwich.”
Kennedy concluded by urging the administration not to squander the moment. “President Trump has won this fight. Now let’s not lose it by not taking the opportunity.”
The senator’s remarks echo broader Republican confidence in the Trump administration’s tariff strategy, which has led to renegotiated trade deals and increasing economic pressure on adversaries like China. Critics of the approach continue to warn about long-term market disruption, but Kennedy insists the U.S. is in a position of strength.
