For the third consecutive week, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have taken to the streets in unprecedented protests against Hamas, the Islamist group governing the territory since 2007. Demonstrators are demanding an end to Hamas’s rule and calling for peace amid ongoing conflict with Israel.
In northern Gaza’s Jabaliya area, hundreds gathered on Sunday, chanting slogans such as “Hamas is a terrorist organization” and “The message is clear: Hamas is garbage.” These protests represent a significant shift, as public dissent against Hamas has been rare due to the group’s history of suppressing opposition.
The protests began on March 25 in Beit Lahia during a funeral procession. Mourners voiced their frustration, leading to widespread demonstrations across the Gaza Strip. Participants have been seen carrying white flags and banners reading “Stop the war” and “We want to live in peace.”
Hamas has responded with force, attempting to quell the unrest. Reports indicate that the group has detained, tortured, and even executed protesters. Notably, 22-year-old Odai Nasser al-Rubai was allegedly abducted, tortured, and killed by Hamas operatives for his involvement in the demonstrations. His family condemned the act, referring to Hamas as a “sinful, rogue” faction.
For years, the people of Gaza have endured oppression, violence, and the brutal consequences of Hamas’s war-driven agenda. Now, even in the face of torture and execution, ordinary citizens are risking everything to speak truth.
