Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar is reportedly preparing to file impeachment articles against three top defense officials involved in the recent Signal chat leaks, Axios reported Thursday. Omar plans to target Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe over the controversy.
The scandal emerged after Waltz accidentally added The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal group chat discussing military operations against Houthi rebels in Yemen. Goldberg subsequently published an article detailing the leaked discussions on Monday. Despite official denials from Trump administration officials that any classified “war plans” were discussed, Goldberg released additional chat logs Wednesday, which allegedly included attack dates and times that later materialized.
Omar has been advocating for impeachment among her Democratic colleagues, according to a senior House Democrat and another source familiar with the matter. As a member of the progressive “Squad,” alongside Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Cori Bush, Omar is pushing for accountability over the breach.
Trump administration officials have defended their handling of the situation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt credited the administration’s “strong and decisive leadership” for the success of the Houthi strikes, emphasizing that eliminating terrorists remains the president’s top priority.
Waltz denied knowing Goldberg, stating in a Fox News interview that Elon Musk has provided top technical experts to investigate how the journalist was added to the chat. Meanwhile, Ratcliffe testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee that Signal is an approved platform for internal discussions and was pre-installed on CIA computers.
Omar’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the impeachment effort.
