Health Officials Alert Public to Measles Exposure on Amtrak Train in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., health authorities have issued a warning regarding potential measles exposure after an infected individual traveled through the area. This marks the third such alert in recent weeks for the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions.

On March 19, the infected person journeyed on an Amtrak Northeast Regional train, potentially exposing passengers and individuals present at Union Station’s Amtrak concourse in Washington, D.C. Subsequently, on March 22, the same individual visited a MedStar Urgent Care facility in the city.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the high transmissibility of measles, noting that approximately 90% of unvaccinated individuals who come into contact with the virus will contract it.

This recent case follows two prior potential exposure incidents reported by D.C. Health on March 9 and March 20, affecting locations in Maryland and Virginia. Currently, eighteen states have confirmed measles cases, totaling 378 infections during the latest reporting period, with three fatalities attributed to the virus this year.
