Former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will no longer receive Secret Service protection after President Donald Trump revoked his security detail, the agency confirmed on Monday. The decision comes months before the protection was originally set to expire, The Washington Post reports.
Mayorkas, who served under President Joe Biden, was not automatically entitled to protection upon leaving office in January. However, Biden had extended his security detail for six months, which would have lasted until mid-July. Trump’s decision to terminate the protection cut that timeline short.
Additionally, Trump ended Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden, the children of the former president. Their security detail officially ceased on Monday, just one week after Trump publicly announced his decision on Truth Social.
“Former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Mr. Hunter and Ms. Ashley Biden and their families are no longer protectees of the United States Secret Service,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.
According to internal records, the Secret Service was notified of the decision on Friday. The move aligns with Trump’s broader efforts to limit extended security privileges for former officials and political figures not mandated by law to receive such protection.
Secret Service protection is typically reserved for sitting and former presidents, vice presidents, and their immediate families. Exceptions can be granted by presidential discretion, as Biden did for Mayorkas, Hunter, and Ashley Biden. Trump’s reversal of that decision signals a shift in how his administration approaches security extensions for former officials and presidential family members.
The decision has sparked debate, with critics arguing that figures like Mayorkas may still face security threats given his role in the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Supporters of the decision contend that Secret Service resources should be focused on current officials and those explicitly entitled to protection.
