Mark Carney Sworn In as New Canadian Prime Minister

Mark Carney has been sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister. Carney was previously governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.

“This team is built for immediate action and focused on protecting Canadian workers, supporting their families, and growing this great country,” Carney said upon being sworn in. “We are changing how things work, so our government can deliver to Canadians faster – and we have an experienced team that is made to meet the moment we are in. Our government is united and strong, and we are getting right to work.”

Earlier this week, Carney discussed the relationship between the U.S. and Canada in the wake of tariffs. “President Trump’s latest tariffs are an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses. My government will ensure our response has maximum impact in the US and minimal impact here in Canada, while supporting the workers impacted,” he wrote on X on March 11. “My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade.”

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party in January.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide, competitive process,” he said during a press conference. “Last night I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”

A January 3 poll showed that support for the Liberals with Trudeau as its leader dropped to 13 percent. The poll further noted that Trudeau had a 59% disapproval rating.
